The Broken Column

The Broken Column is an alternative rock band from Los Angeles, Calif.

“The three of us worked at a computer store together in Hollywood, Calif., and discovered we shared the same passion and talent for music,” the band said. “After the discovery, we started to jam, rehearse, and write together and everything else naturally progressed.”

They hope to keep their music going such as their influences.

“When we see or hear some of our influences such as Pearl Jam or Foo Fighters still putting out incredible records that we can’t stop listening to after being in the game for a couple decades,” the band said. “Everyday is an obstacle trying to figure out new ways to get our music in the ears of the people. It’s an exciting challenge that we take on whole heartedly.”

Their influences include Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Deftones, and Brand New.

Where is the band from originally and how did the band form?

We formed in Los Angeles, CA in late 2008. The three of us worked at a computer store together in Hollywood, CA and discovered we shared the same passion and talent for music. After the discovery, we started to jam, rehearse, and write together and everything else naturally progressed.

How did you come up with the name The Broken Column?

Our name stems from a piece of artwork by Frida Khalo titled, “The Broken Column”. We’re inspired by art of all mediums and the name of that piece resonated with us.

Who are the members of your band?

Daniel Sahagun - vocals/guitar, Scott Trieglaff - bass/vocals, Tyler Coleman - drums

How and when did you get your start?

Referring back to the first question, we got our start when we discovered we share the same passion for music while working together. We’ve kept at it ever since.

Do you guys have formal training in music?

Daniel studied music in school for a little while. Scott took guitar lessons for five years and graduated from the Musicians Institute with an associates degree in guitar performance. Tyler took 2 years of drum lessons learning drum rudiments as well as how to read music.

Who are your influences? Have you been able to contact or play with these artists?

We’re influenced by a wide range of artists including Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, Deftones, Brand New, and many, many more. Being from Los Angeles, we’ve had various opportunities to meet famous artists. It would be an honor and privilege to have the opportunity to share the stage with any of them throughout the course of our career.

What is your favorite music to listen to?

It ranges from rock, alternative, indie, pop, folk, jazz, blues, gospel, etc. It really comes down to anything that sounds good and/or inspires us to do what we do.

How did you know what type of music you wanted to play?

It wasn’t a predetermined agreement of what type music we’d play, it’s the music we love, are influenced by, and grew up with.

Who writes your music and how do you get your ideas for the songs?

We all write differently but always collaborate with each other to produce our sound. From a musical idea that we have to having an entire song written from beginning to end, we all have a hand in the writing process.

What has been the band’s biggest success?

Our biggest success thus far has been the release of our record, “Need A Revolution?”.

What inspires you to keep your music going?

When we see/hear some of our influences such as Pearl Jam or Foo Fighters still putting out incredible records that we can’t stop listening to after being in the game for a couple decades.

Have you come across any obstacles when trying to get your music out?

Everyday is an obstacle trying to  figure out new ways to get our music in the ears of the people. It’s an exciting challenge that we take on whole heartedly.

What was the most interesting experience you’ve had in your career?

At our first show in New Mexico, a girl tattooed the name of one of our new songs on her hip immediately after we played. The song is titled, “Go For The Gun”.

Have you been able to tour? If so, where have you toured and where is your favorite venue?

So far we’ve toured throughout CA, AZ, NM, CO, and OK. Soon to be added to that list is Canada as well as 16 other states. Our favorite venue so far is the House of Blues.

How do you come about your recording process?

Thankfully, we various resources at our disposal. We’ll track guitars at one studio, drums and bass at another, and vocals at another. We’re looking forward to recording our next record with all three of us tracking everything live simultaneously.

How many albums do you have out?

We have had 2 releases: “Need A Revolution?” and “Walking All This Way”.

What was the response to your first album?

We’ve gotten a very positive response with the songs, quality, and overall sound of the record.

What are your future plans?

Writing, filming videos for various songs, touring, and recording our next record.

Do you have jobs outside of being in the band?

We used to all have “9-5‘s” but now we depend solely on The Broken Column to make a living.

What do you do on your free time outside of being in the band?

Aside from shows, writing, and rehearsals, we enjoy hanging out and spending time with friends and family. There’s really never a moment where we’re not thinking about music and what we can do next.
